A lot of people considering personal training in Amsterdam West have never trained with a coach before — some have barely trained at all.
If that’s you, this one’s written for you. Being a complete beginner isn’t a barrier to personal training; if anything, it’s exactly who personal training is built for.
Here’s what starting from zero actually looks like.
Do I need any fitness experience to start?
None. Your first session starts by understanding where your body is right now — not where you think it should be. There’s no assumed baseline of fitness, strength, or prior training.
What if I’m out of shape or overweight?
That’s a completely normal starting point, not an obstacle. Your programme is built around your current ability, and it progresses at a pace your body can actually handle. Nobody is thrown into exercises they’re not ready for.
Will I feel embarrassed or out of place?
Personal training is one-to-one, so there’s no group to compare yourself against and no one watching you struggle with something everyone else finds easy. It’s just you and your coach, focused entirely on your own progress.
What does a beginner’s first few weeks actually look like?
Mostly learning: how to move well, how to breathe through effort, how to recognise the difference between productive discomfort and something you should stop and flag. The goal early on isn’t intensity — it’s building a foundation you can build on safely.
How do I know my coach won’t push me too hard, too fast?
That’s exactly what a good coach avoids. As one client, Ben Simpson, put it: “Solly is a very knowledgeable and structured coach. Always brings a positive attitude!” A structured approach means your progression is deliberate, not guesswork — you’re pushed enough to improve, never enough to get hurt or burnt out.
When will I start feeling like I know what I’m doing?
Sooner than you’d expect. Most beginners start feeling genuinely comfortable with the basics within the first month or two of consistent sessions — and from there, progress tends to build on itself.
